Chinese Citron (Citrus medica aurantiata)
DESCRIPTION
Chinese Citron (Citrus medica aurantiata) is a particular and rare Citron variety of our collection.
ORIGIN
As the name suggest, it comesfrom China, where it’s been highly grown for years.
PLANT
-Tree features: Plant is typically slow in growth, and branches tend to lignify quickly as every Citron.
-Leaves: Leaves are round in shape, medium-big in size, extremely dark-green in colour.
FRUIT
-Shape: Fruit is a big oval to oblate and rough Citron.
-Flavour: Skin is aromatic and a little bit bitter. Pulp is somewhat acid, with a bitter aftertaste.
-Colour: Deep yellow to orange to deep orange depending on climate conditions.
SEASON OF RIPENESS
Season of ripeness: It starts to ripen from Winter time to Spring time depending on flowering time.
It usually starts to bloom during Spring time, but it seems to be a 4 season variety: flowers can be produced in different periods of the year.
HOW TO USE IT
-In the Kitchen: Skin can be candied whole, and it’s delicious!
You can also use it for zesting, giving your recipes a special aroma!
-Ornamental: Chinese Citron is one of the most beautiful and ornamental citrons.
COLD RESISTENCE
According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -6°C.
This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
