Perché i limoni cadono?

Because lemons fall?

Why small citrus fruits fall?

Our citrus trees have started to blossom and you start to see the first fruits of their kids. We are all happy to see the fruits of that a day will come to maturation.

But at a certain point, what happens? At some point, these small fruits fall down, all in the earth, for no apparent reason. I have school, I gave thewater, I was careful in the sun and in the light… and yet, the fruits are fallen. Why is this happening? What does it depend on?

Vintages of charge and dump

Plants of the citrus – like many other fruit plants – balance your fruiting through a complex natural system, is still not entirely clear. This phenomenon is the so-called vintages of charge and vintages download.

What does it mean? According to the climatic conditions and the treatment received, a plant can have:

  • The vintages charge → abundant production of fruits
  • Vintages download → reduced or absent production of fruits

Now we talk about the fruit fall to the ground, the phenomenon for which the plant expels its fruits before ripening.

Because the citrus lose the fruits?

The causes can be different:

1. Adverse weather conditions

  • Sudden storms
  • Hailstorms
  • Strong wind
  • Intense rain

2. Nutritional deficiencies

  • Fertilization insufficient or incorrect
  • Lack of essential nutrients

If the plant does not have enough energy, prefer to expel the fruits rather than bring them to maturity.

3. Water management

  • Too much or too little water
  • Stagnant water or drought

The fruits are the most delicate part of the plant. If the balance is altered, the plant reacts expelling them.

4. The presence of fungi or parasites

  • Some fungi can affect the fruiting (more rare in the summer).
  • Insects such as the moth can crack and small fruits, causing them to fall.

What to do to avoid the drop?

Background: to completely avoid the drop is almost impossible, because it is a natural process of self-regulation of the plant. However, you can follow some tricks to reduce the problem:

Proper management of the water → water only when the soil is dry, avoiding stagnation.
Fertilization adjust → granular fertilizers with a monthly or liquid fertilizer several times a month.
Avoid excessive exposure to the sun → in summer, protecting the fruits of more delicate with a half-shadow.

These small steps can help you reduce the fruit fall to the ground, even if you do not delete it entirely.
