DESCRIPTION
Horned Bitter Orange (Citrus aurantium) is a particular ancient, and cold tollerant Citrus variety of our collection.
ORIGIN
We still don’t know its origin at the moment.
We know it’s a very ancient variety already grown in gardens since the 1700.
PLANT
-Tree features: Plant has a good vigour, with long and sometimes thorny branches.
-Leaves: Leaves are lanceolate in shape, medium in size and dark-green in colour.
FRUIT
-Shape: Fruit is a particular bitter orange in shape and size.
Sometimes it has those particular horns on the skin.
-Flavour: Skin is very intense in aroma, pulp is acid to bitter in taste, and usually seedy.
-Colour: Orange to deep orange outside, pulp is light orange in colour.
SEASON OF RIPENESS
Season of ripeness: It tends to be 4 season in fruiting. Fruits start to be ready from Winter to Summer time depending on flowering.
It usually starts to bloom during Spring time, then it can continue during Summer.
HOW TO USE IT
-In the Kitchen: Horned Bitter Orange can be used just like any other bitter orange in the kitchen.
Skin is very aromatic, and can be used to make candied peels, liquors, or simply to give a special flavour to your recipes.
Fruit can be used to make marmalades, (delicious)
-Ornamental: It’s a good ornamental choice for its particular fruit shape and its intense colour.
COLD RESISTENCE
According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -12°C.
This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
