Amalfi Citron (Citrus medica)
DESCRIPTION
Amalfi Citron (Citrus medica) is a traditional Citrus variety.
ORIGIN
It comes from southern Italy, where it’s been highly grown for several years.
PLANT
-Tree features: Big, long branches which tend to lignify quickly. Sometimes thorns can be found.
-Leaves: Big round to lanceolate shaped leaves.
FRUIT
–Shape: Oval to oblate at the petiol.
-Taste: It tastes acid inside, skin is quite bitter.
-Colour: Light yellow to bright yellow depending on the harvesting time.
SEASON OF RIPENESS
Amalfi Citron starts to ripen from November to February. However, it can hold well on the tree for several months.
It usually blooms during Spring, but it tends to be a 4 season variety.
HOW TO USE IT
-In the Kitchen: It’s a good choice to make candied peels. Acid can be squeezed too!
You can also zest it to make delicious cakes.
-Ornamental: It fills up with fruits and flowers, that’s why it’s a great ornamental choice!
COLD RESISTENCE
According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -6°C.
This variety needs to be grown like a classic Lemon.
