Bizzarria Orange (Citrus aurantium) is one of the most strange, particular and traditional Citrus variety of our collection.
We still don’t know its origin exactly.
We do know it’s a very ancient variety, discovered by Pietro Nati, a botanist .
It’s been then re-discovered by Galeotti, of Castello Gardens in Florence.
-Tree features: Plant is very particular in shape. It can produce bitter orange, lemons and mixed branches on the same plant!
-Leaves: Leaves are typically lanceolate, to round shaped, to twist shaped.
-Shape: Fruits can be: Bitter oranges, lemons and mixed ones.
The prevalent character is the bitter orange one!
-Flavour: It tastes like a classic bitter orange.
-Colour: It can be yellow to orange to greeny orange.
SEASON OF RIPENESS
Season of ripeness: It starts to ripen from September to February depending on flowering time.
It usually starts to bloom during Spring time. Flowers can be white to purplish.
HOW TO USE IT
-In the Kitchen: Bizzarria Orange can be highly used in the kitchen, just like any other bitter orange.
You can zest the skin, squeeze the juice to make different kind of recipes.
Marmalades, liquors, desserts are great choices to use it.
-Ornamental: For its unique shape, it’s one of the best ornamental Citrus we know
According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -15°C.
This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
