Shekwasha Mandarin (Citrus reticulata)
DESCRIPTION
Shekwasha Mandarin (Citrus reticulata) is one of the most cold hardy mandarins in our collection.
PLANT
-Tree features: It’s a vigorous and compact plant.
-Leaves: Small leaves, with short internodes. That’s why it tends to have a pretty spherical shape.
FRUIT
–Shape: Round to slighty flattened at the pole.
-Taste: It tastes like a mandarin, a little bit more acid.. It’s highly juicy and seedy inside.
It’s used just like a classic lemon because the juice is a little bit acid and very refreshing.
-Colour: Orange to deep orange outside, light orange inside, depending on the harvesting time.
SEASON OF RIPENESS
Shekwasha Mandarin starts to ripen from November to January, depending on the climate conditions.
It usually blooms during Spring.
HOW TO USE IT
-In the Kitchen: You can squeeze it like a orange, but it’s higly used just like a classic lemon when it’s still green, especially in Japan.
Also you can zest it, or combine it with fish and meat. Liquors and marmalades are also great.
-Ornamental: It’s a compact and nice plant to see, especially when it’s full of fruits and flowers.
COLD RESISTENCE
According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -10°C.
This variety needs to be grown like a normal Lemon.
