Variegated Bitter Orange (Citrus aurantium variegata)

DESCRIPTION
Variegated Bitter Orange (Citrus aurantium foliis variegatis) is a particular cold tollerant Citrus of our collection.

ORIGIN

We still don’t know its origin at the moment.
It probably derives from a mutation of a classic Bitter Orange in Southern Italy.

PLANT

-Tree features: Plant is very vigorous in growth, compacted in shape, sometimes a little bit thorny.
-Leaves: Leaves are obviously variegated in colour, lanceolate in shape and medium in size.

FRUIT

-Shape: Fruit grows just like a classic bitter orange on the plant.
-Flavour: Fruit is usually very aromatic in taste, pulp is so juicy and usually seedy.
-Colour: Orange to deep orange outside, light orange inside.

SEASON OF RIPENESS

Season of ripeness: Fruits start to ripen from December to Spring time, according to flowering.
It usually starts to bloom during Spring time, but sometimes flowers can be produced in different periods too.

HOW TO USE IT

-In the Kitchen: Variegated Bitter Orange can be highly used in the kitchen and cosmetic.
Fruit can be zested or squeezed for its particular intense aroma.
Marmalades, liquors, sauces and candied peels are amazing choices.
-Ornamental: It’s one of the best ornamental Citrus of our collection.

COLD RESISTENCE

According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -15°C.

This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
