Satsuma Okitsu Mandarin (Citrus unshiu)
DESCRIPTION
Satsuma Okitsu Mandarin (Citrus unshiu) is considered a extra early ripening and cold resistent variety.
It comes from Japan, and it’s highly grown in cold places, due to its resistence to cold.
PLANT
-Tree features: it’s a vigorous plant, with long and falling branches.
-Leaves: Lanceolate long leaves, with particular visble ribs.
FRUIT
-Taste: It’s very sweet and juicy also when the fruit is still green. Sometimes seeds can be found.
After December skin starts to detach from the pulp creating a vacuum of air, but it still remains juicy.
-Colour: When it’s ready fruit can be still green. Then it becomes orange.
Pulp is orange.
SEASON OF RIPENESS
Satsuma Okitsu mandarin starts to ripen from mid-September to November depending on the climate, and the moment you want to eat it.
It usually blooms during Spring.
HOW TO USE IT
-In the Kitchen: You can squeeze it like an orange, or eat it like a classic mandarin.
-Ornamental: Long and falling branches can be so particular, especially when there are flowers and fruits.
COLD RESISTENCE
According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -10°C.
This variety needs to be grown like a normal Lemon.
