Iyo San Ponkan Mandarin (Citrus reticulata blanco)
DESCRIPTION
Iyo San Ponkan Mandarin (Citrus reticulata blanco) is a rare citrus variety of our collection.
ORIGIN
Its origin is actually a mistery.
It probably comes from Taiwan, but it seems to be grown in all over the Japan, and Asia in general.
PLANT
-Tree features: Plant is medium -slow in growth, and it’s similar to a mandarin in all the features.
-Leaves: Leaves are medium to small in size, light green in color, slightly round in shape.
FRUIT
-Shape: Iyo San Ponkan Mandarin is usually round, with a pear-shape tendency: it seems a small lemon pear!
-Flavour: the flavour is so refreshing, fruits are sweet inside, juicy enough with a mandarin-lemon typical flavour.
-Colour: the colour is usually light yellow to darker according to the harvesting time.
SEASON OF RIPENESS
Season of ripeness: It usually ripens during Winter (from January to March about)
It usually starts to bloom during Spring, but we still don’t know if it can produce flowers in different times of the year.
HOW TO USE IT
-In the Kitchen: Fruit can be used just like a classic mandarin in the kitchen. It can be zested, or squeezed according to your needs!
-Ornamental: for the small leaves, and the nice pear shaped fruits, it can be considered a good looking ornamental variety as well.
COLD RESISTENCE
According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of – 8°C but probably it could be more hardy.
This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
