Newhall Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)
DESCRIPTION
Newhall Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) is a bright yellow early citrus variety of our collection.
ORIGIN
It originates from a limb sport of a Washington Navel Orange, found in a little californian town.
PLANT
-Tree features: Plant is usually compact and spherical in shape, following a typical Washington Navel orange “style”.
-Leaves: Leaves are dark green in colour, and lanceolate.
FRUIT
-Shape: Fruit is slightly more oblate than a classic Washington Navel orange.
-Flavour:
It tastes so sweet and juice, and it’s usually seedless.
-Colour:
It’s somewhat more yellow and fresh in colour than a classic Navel.
Pulp is light yellow.
SEASON OF RIPENESS
Season of ripeness: It tends to ripen earlier than a Washington Navel orange. Fruits can be picked already in October/November.
That’s interesting, because you can pick up your fruits before the cold comes!
It usually starts to bloom during Spring time.
HOW TO USE IT
-In the Kitchen: Newhall sweet orange can be squeezed to make delicious juices,
but also marmalades, fish and meat recipes, liquors!
-Ornamental: It is slightly less vigorous than a classic Navel Orange. But’s it’s a nice ornamental choice.
COLD RESISTENCE
According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -9°C.
This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
