DESCRIPTION
Volkamer Lemon (Citrus volkameriana) is one of the most cold resistent Lemon of our collection.
ORIGIN
This variety comes from a cross between a Sour Mandarin and a Citron, and it’s been discovered from Johann Cristoph Volkamer, a German botanist.
PLANT
-Tree features: Plant is very compact in shape, medium in size and vigour.
Thorns are usually found.
-Leaves: Leaves are lanceolate, bright green in colour, medium in size and sometimes double.
FRUIT
-Shape: Fruit is a classic lemon in size and shape.
-Flavour: Juice can be squeezed like every Citrus. Skin is medium in aroma, and rich in essential oils.
-Colour: Skin is orange to deep orange outside. Pulp is light orange inside, and sometimes seedy.
SEASON OF RIPENESS
Season of ripeness: Volkamer Lemon starts to ripen from Winter to Spring time, according to the flowering time.
It usually starts to bloom during Spring time, then it can continue after several months.
HOW TO USE IT
-In the Kitchen: You can use it just like a classic lemon in the kitchen.
Zests, juice, to make marmalades, to marinate, baking and a milion of recipes more.
-Ornamental: It’s a nice ornamental choice because of its shape and its cold tollerance.
It’s also highly used as a rootstock in southern Italy.
COLD RESISTENCE
According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -12°C.
This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
