DESCRIPTION
Castello lemon Citron (Citrus limonimedica) is considered to be a hybrid between a Lemon and a Citron.
ORIGIN
We don’t really know its real origin.
But we know it’s been highly grown in Florence from the “Medici family” hundreds of years ago.
We still have ancient plants in florentine gardens collections.
PLANT
-Tree features: Plant is medium in vigour, with a little bit thorny branches.
-Leaves: Leaves are lanceolate, bright green in colour.
FRUIT
-Shape: Fruit is an exact mixture between a Lemon and a Citron, in shape and size.
It also is a little bit wrinckled on the skin.
-Flavour: It tastes like a lemon. However skin is bigger and resembles those of a Citron.
-Colour: It’s light yellow in colour to yellow depending on the harvesting time.
Pulp is light yellow.
SEASON OF RIPENESS
Season of ripeness: It starts to ripen from November to February/march according to climate conditions.
It usually starts to bloom during Spring. Sometimes flowers can be seen in other periods of the year.
HOW TO USE IT
-In the Kitchen: Castello Lemon Citron can be used zested or candied because of its great skin, or simply squeezed just like a lemon.
-Ornamental: it’s a beautiful ornamental plants for its fruit shape, and its historical importance.
COLD RESISTENCE
According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -8°C.
This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
