Pompia (Citrus mostruosa)

DESCRIPTION
Pompia (Citrus mostruosa) seem to be a particular citrus variety.
It seems to be a mixture between a Bitter Orange and a Citron. 

ORIGIN
It originates from Siniscola, Sardinia, where it’s highly grown and used in the kitchen following old traditions.

PLANT

-Tree features: Plant is usually medium vigorous, with long bright and thorny green branches.
-Leaves: Leaves are round-shaped, dark-green in colour.

FRUIT

-Shape: Fruit is a rough citrus flattened at the poles.
-Flavour: It’s bitter/acid in flavour. Skin has a particular citron aroma.
-Colour: It’s deep yellow outside.
Pulp tends to be light yellow in colour.

SEASON OF RIPENESS

Season of ripeness: Pompia starts to ripen from November to February, but fruit can hold well on the tree.
It usually starts to bloom during Spring.

HOW TO USE IT

-In the Kitchen:
Old sardinian recipes suggest us to make a special traditional dessert “sa pompia intrea” which is basically a candied fruit.
You can also zest it or use it to make amazing marmalades.
-Ornamental: It’s a beautiful ornamental plant in colour and fruiting.

COLD RESISTENCE

According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -8°C.

This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
